| Overlook Cave |
Dec. 2009
Back in 1996 I happened to find this cave. I was not the first. It had been visited before. I found a jar hanging in the front room with a paper inside it for visitors to put their names. The paper was put there by one of the Ohio cave groups. The picture shown at the right is not the entrance to Overlook Cave. This opening is in the area, and looks very interesting, but the passage goes only about 50 ft and tapers down to fox hole size. I found the entrance to Overlook Cave, or one anyway. I don't know about any others. Soon after finding this cave, I went inside on two occasions with David, my usual caving partner, and Arnold, another friend and co-worker ( back then). Arnold owns property near the cave.
We explored where we could walk, which was wasn't a whole lot, but enough to have an interesting time. There are some large spaces in there, and a deep trench, or whatever it might be called. We went back to where the passage tapered down to some crawl tunnels, and that's as far as we went. I think there might have been some other crawl holes along the way.
This is the front room, just inside the entrance. Arnold is standing a bit right of center.
This shows a column in the back of the front room. There is a white, spiney formation hanging above Arnold's head. The photo just below, on the right, is a close-up of that formation. We found several interesting formations in this cave, not a whole lot, but some.
The photo below on the left, I think, is some of the passage just beyond the front room. It 's been a long time since I was there.
.
Below left, is some of the tunnel we passed through. The photo at right shows a fork, I think
Below left, is part of a chimney, with a formation on the right side. Photo on the right is a close-up of this formation.
.
I'm not sure about the order of some scenes, but I know we looked around some after going into the cave and then thought that was all of it, but Arnold found this slope shown below left, so we went up that and soon found this trench, shown on the right. I guess this slope is in the trench, and we went up on the high side.
I think we walked back through there on one of the ledges, the one on the right probably, it is more suitable.
Not far back through the trench, we came out into this area, with this cluster in the middle, sort of . It looks more like mud drippings, than rock. Some formations back there look more traditional, but this group is different. Behind that, we found where the tunnel tapered down to two or more crawl holes. There might be a couple of short passages beyond this place, that taper down. Not sure now. That was as far as we got.
Here are a couple more photos of formations we found.
I found one something like what is shown on the left that is somewhat translucent. I made a photo by using a flash on the back side, but it didn't come out as good as I wanted.
This cave was interesting, but we couldn't go far by walking, and we didn't want to crawl. This one has a few nice formations, and is somewhat different from others. I haven't been there since then. I thought I might go back again and make more photos, but haven't yet. Maybe some time.
