Raven's Run
Nature Sanctuary
xxxxSouth of Lexington, Ky
How to get there:
From
Lexington, go south on Richmond Road (421/25) to state route 1975
(County map also shows it as Jacks Creek Road). Turn right on
1975. Follow 1975 about 2 1/2 miles and turn left at the next
intersection. I'm not sure now what sign is there, but the
turnoff appears to be 1975. Soon there is a fork, and you go
right on Jacks Creek Rd. (1976) and stay on that until you come
to Raven's Run on the left.
The place is open Wed.--Sunday. Close at 4:30 pm. Phone#: 859-272-6105
There is a fair size parking lot there. From the lot, follow a walkway to the small building where the sanctuary personnel stay, and you can get a map and information. The beginning of the trails is behind that.
Raven's Run has open fields with lots of flowers, and plenty of woods. It extends to the Kentucky River on one side. You will find an overlook there with this view. The river was muddy the day Barb and I went on our first outing to RR.
There are several trails throughout the park, through and around fields and through the woods. The trails through the fields are kept mowed. The map shows them, and I'd advise taking one. We saw several different kinds of flowers.
Raven's Run Creek, a nice creek, flows through the property and empties into the Kentucky River. There used to be an old mill at the creek. All that remains now is some of the stone block foundation. A trail goes by this relic, and there is a small viewing platform above it. The creek bed is below the foundation.
Barb and I went out there only twice, and we liked this area best because of the creek. It's an interesting creek with some small waterfalls, and a good place to spend a while.
One afternoon after work Barb and I went out
there on a rainy day. It was around 3pm when we got there, and
rain was light. It stopped soon
after we got out there. The creek was running nicely. At right is
a picture of the main falls on that creek. It is upstream from
the old mill site. Barb and I really enjoy a good flowing creek.
This is a scene along the creek between the falls shown above and the old mill site.

Above and to the right are pictures of the junction of the main creek and another smaller creek, at the old mill site.
This picture is
similar to the one above right, but it includes a thin stream
falling from the wall, and that added a nice touch to the whole
scene.
This creek runs on down to the Kentucky River, and Barb and I intended to follow it down, but haven't done it yet. Maybe this spring.
