Cogur Falls

I think this waterfall, in south central KY, is known as Cogur Falls, even though it is not on a waterway by the name of Cogur. It is, however, near that creek, and this little stream flows into it. I'm not sure about the height, but my guess is near 20ft. Not all of it shows in this picture.

This stream has cut a fairly deep, narrow hollow, so it probably runs most of the time, if only a little at times. After a good rain, it probably pours. It was running pretty good that day we went, in early May 2011.

Water takes a switchback course to the bottom.

We crossed the stream a little above the falls and walked along the other side, where we could look down into the narrow hollow and see some of it. I walked a little of the first side, but had better viewing on the far side. There are some overhangs, and dark areas.

From the far side, near the waterfall, I made my way down to a lower level and made some side views of the upper part of the falls. This one was made with a film camera, and a wide angle lens.

This photo shows a mess we found at the top of the falls, on one side, in a secondary channel. What you see here are a bunch of used diapers. Somebody dumped a load of diapers at the top of the falls. I guess the intent was for them to be flushed down into the hollow and out of sight. They are probably down there now, scattered along the course.

Maybe somebody was camped out there for a couple days or so, and then needed to get rid of diapers. Seems like they could have buried them in the woods, or at least dumped them in the woods out of the way, instead of throwing them right at the top of a nice waterfall. I just don't understand some people. Best thing would have been to take them somewhere else and dispose of them properly. I've seen trash left at places, and even a diaper here and there, but not this. It is a shame.

Those people didn't have to hike a mile or two to get to this place. They drove close to it. I like places that are not very hard to get to, that don't require a whole lot of walking, but that makes it easier for those who will trash a place. That makes me not want to disclose the location, exactly, of this place and some others.

One of these days I want to go back there and try to find a way down that is not too difficult. I think it is possible to go down near the falls, but that way is steep, and might require a couple of short drops, and a rough way back up. I'll look for something better. I want to look around the place more anyway, sometime.
