Kodak Pocket 1A

In 1989 or 1990 I bought this antique Kodak camera, with box and instruction booklet, and cable release. The booklet is dated 1926. The end came off the box eventually, and the cable release, with a cloth sheath, came apart. It also came with a metal scribe for writing the date on the back of the film. That was lost when things got moved.

I thought it would be interesting to use this old camera, and in 1990 I adapted it to use 120 film, which is similar in size to the 116 film it was intended to use, but was no longer made. It was just a matter of rigging up spacers for the smaller spools.

First I used black & white film, then color positive. Both worked ok. The only problem was a light leak somewhere in there that I couldn't find. I even taped the folds on the bellows, but that didn't stop it. The tape has since been removed.

I carried this Kodak out to different places of interest, and made various pictures. I have another web page about this camera, and a certain place in western Kentucky, with several pictures: Preacher Creek, in the Western section.

These were made in the Shady Grove area, in western Kentucky, near Princeton. A man named Bob Johnson owned land there, and he was kind enough to let me roam out there. The Westvaco Paper Mill also owned land in that area, and the cliff shown on the right happens to be on the border of their holdings. Westvaco has a lot of interesting areas of rocky land. I used to roam some of their land in Livingston county, then branched out to Crittenden, and Caldwell counties.

These two images were made in Tom O'Neil Hollow, in Livingston County I think.. Two brothers owned some land out there, bordering on Westvaco land in another area, and gave me permission to roam with my camera. I took the old Kodak out to this area one day and made several exposures.

That Kodak is all manual, so I had to use a light meter, and a couple of charts to go by to set it. Some shots came out ok, some didn't.

One thing about this camera is the long frame length, and that is good for many situations.

These next two pictures were made in the Vicks Bluff area, near Smithland, KY, out by the old rock quarry. Westvaco has some land back there. I'm not sure if this creek and falls is on their land, but I think so. This is a neat place, with a nice, three tier waterfall. It is near the Ohio River.

Another interesting place is Carrsville, KY, in Livingston County. This view was made from a place called "Lovers Leap", along a cliff overlooking the Ohio River. The boat ramp at Carrsville is at the far right.

Another interesting area in Livingston County is a rocky piece of land aptly called "Gibralter." This place is also on Westvaco land. It is kind of like a wooded mesa. I walked around it one time, and after walking a while, wondered if I was going to get around to the starting point any time soon. Finally made it.

This isn't a cave, just an overhang.

One more photo made with the old Kodak--a knife I made. Blade is 11 inches long, 3/16ths inch thick. 01 Tool steel.
